You are an admirable catholic, however I feel compelled to point out some flaws in your logic. Over reaction or not the I think the more fundamental question is if the muslims hadn't captured territory in Anatolia would the Church have gone on a crusade by themselves ... I think not. A fundamental precept of defending yourself is when you are attacked you attack back with a force that damages your opponent to the extent that he cannot attack you back again. Proportional response is baloney.
Bottom line ... Don't start nothin' won't be nothin'.
